COSV RE COSTCO KOSHER PRODUCTS

As some earlier comments show, there is some concerns  for the local Jewish food stores, being undercut by the "Big American". So the question is, are we happy that consumers will be getting a better deal? Or should we focus on the damage that Costco may do to our established kosher vendors?

  1. Lets support Costco! Hopefully they will begin to import more Jewish related items that will make it cheaper and easier to be frum in Melbourne.

    It is no secret that our local shops charge ludicrous prices. I recently bought something in one of our Judaica shops that costs 5 shekel (AUD $1.50) in Israel and it cost me $15.99 here, thats over 1,000% mark up!!!

  2. Ironic that Gefen liquor store is a sponsor of the COSV website yet on the very same page that contains their advertisement, the COSV is plugging Pesach grape juice at "The Big American"

  3. I would have thought that the Orthodox would have wanted more competition so that those who are not Kosher may consider becoming Kosher if the prices are right.

    Please forward.

    Hi, There has been some hype in the community regarding Costco selling Kosher Le’Pesach goods.
    I have managed to do a bit of research and have come to the conclusion there are NO METZIOS on kosher le’pesach food.

    Costco Prices:
    Kinor grape juice $5.99 - 946ml
    Matzo Meals $5.39
    Kvutzat Yavneh dill pickles $3.49
    Bnei Brak Matzo 5pk $17.00
    Gefilte fish jars $8.89

    Coles and other Local stores
    Kedem Grape juice $8.45 - 2.84liter
    Matzo meals $3.49
    Pri v'yerek pickles $1.79
    Yehuda Matzo singles $3.49
    Sniders matzo singles $3.29
    Gefilte fish jars $7.99

    Yumi's is selling Kedem juice for $5.00 - 946ml

    I was under the impression that Costco was very very cheap, I took the time and effort to schlep to Footscray and was disappointed with the results (the above prices are without factoring time, petrol etc.)!

    Coles, Rishon etc etc have better prices and are local, by the end of the week they will all be fully stocked of the Kosher Le’Pesach products.

    We should all think about supporting our local stores, that support our community.

    Chag Sameach to all.

  5. And different POV on Costco:

    From: kbcom
    Subject: costco pesach products

    hi
    i heard about the email you were sending around how costco prices are the same as coles, now i'm not coming on costcos behalf only to let people know that there are cheap things there as well, that your email fail to list.

    * gefen chocolat macaroons $4.88
    * gefen marshmallows $2.49
    * gefen tomato sauce (can) $1.09
    * gefen ketchup $4.25
    * Kedem Apple Juice $4.45

    so there are cheap things as well
    a kosherin freilichin (and inexpensive) pesach.

  6. Apparently Klein is a made up name. The source of the letter is rumored to be one of our expensive Kosher Food importers who supply Coles and do not appreciate the competition that Cosco is causing.

  7. Re 'sba said - different POV from Costco"
    The items listed here, are 'luxury'/ 'nosh' items, whereas in the previous email comparison is made on more basic goods.
    It is the basic goods which count - matzo, grape juice, matzo meal, and the comparison should be done on these.

    The Four Qestions of this years Haggadah!

    1) How would Klein know what coles will have by the end of the week?
    2) How does Coles support our community?
    3) Why not mention Kraus, Alex, Meal Mart, Tempo etc.etc.?
    4) Why not mention all the other items where Costco is apparently cheaper?

    I believe Costco deserves everyones support to ensure Kosher stays affordable.

  11. If it is true that the letter claiming Costco is more expensive is misleading,it should be reported to the Office of Fair Trading and Business Affairs.

    COMPARISONS NEED TO BE DONE ON ANY ITEM PEOPLE BUY IRRELEVANT IF IT IS BASIC, LUXURY OR WHATEVER.
    THE ISSUE IS TO HELP FAMILIES SAVE MONEY.

    BY THE WAY WHY ARE TOMATOE SAUCE, KETCHUP, APPLE JUICE NOSH AND LUXURY ITEMS??

  13. let them pay for the rip offs!Sunday, March 07, 2010 5:52:00 PM

    Instead of the community having to give hand out to poor and large families to enable them to afford Pesach, The Rabbanim should put a tax on all food importers who make large profits from the expensive prices they charge for Pesach groceries.

  14. Maybe some people don't want us to do to much research!

  15. Apparently a few Adass members decided to import esential food items to help make Pesach more affordable, but were forced to abandon their plans.

  16. yeah, true. but they ended up getting the same fantastic prices from a local importer
